Your Friendly Neighbourhood, Spiderman

Spiderman has touched the hearts and spirits of many, and is without a doubt one of the most popular comic book superheroes worldwide

Spiderman is one of the most well recognised and loved superheroes of all time. Since his first appearance in 1962 with the Fantastic 4, Spiderman has sold over 400 million comics worldwide, not including spin-off comics. Spiderman has also been seen in other popular culture items, such as videogames, television, movies, and even Broadway musicals. The most recent Spiderman production is the Broadway musical “Spiderman: Turn off the Dark”. There is also to be a reboot of the Spiderman films to be released in 2012 to 2013.

Spiderman is a fictional character created by Marvel Comics, and their head writer Stan Lee. They wanted to create a superhero that the teenage population could relate too. His first appearance was with the Fantastic 4, in the comic “Amazing Fantasy” issue #15. Spiderman became an instant hit and Marvel gave the green light to create a series of Spiderman comics. Spiderman was unique among superheroes; he was a teenager who had to deal with adolescence, school, and his newfound powers, and unlike most teenage superheroes, he was not just a sidekick. Spiderman had no one to teach and guide him; he had to learn how to use his powers alone and had to learn what it meant to be a hero by himself. Since the comic started with him in his teenage years, avid readers where able to watch as he grew older dealing with both happiness and tragedy.

Peter Parker is Spiderman. He was a normal teenager who was bit by a radioactive spider. The spider bite gave him super powers: superhuman strength and dexterity, a sixth sense that helps him escape danger that he calls his “spidey sense”,  the ability to cling on walls like a spider, and the ability to shoot webs that were virtually indestructible.

Like all superheroes, Spiderman had many archenemies- Venom, Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus being the most infamous. As Spiderman is from the Marvel Universe, he has also fought villains from other comic books, like Magneto from the X-Men.

Spiderman is a well-loved superhero, with millions of fans worldwide. Millions of people have shared in Spiderman’s adventures; they have laughed at his jokes, wept when he has lost friends and family to evil villains, cheered for him as his fought to save innocent lives and watched the somewhat nerdy teenager Peter Parker grown into a man. Spiderman has touched the hearts and spirits of many, and is without a doubt is one of the most popular comic book superheroes worldwide.
